starts now. good morning to you. live look outside. happy friday, everyone. it is october 12th, 2012. that is the u.s. capitol dome and we are in washington, d.c. where the nationals are still alive. good morning. i'm wisdom martin. sarah has the day off. welcome to fox 5 morning news. i was trying to give you an out by talking about the nationals and the os won and the excitement. >> we got a lot of great baseball later this afternoon. >> what is up with the weather? >> so let's get to some numbers. let's talk about right now. we are cool and the temperatures falling back. look at dulles, 39 degrees at dulles. 49 at reagan national. lots of sunshine today but off to the north and west, see the chock out towards detroit, that

is our next cold front that. will wash through here later today. it will pick up the winds. later this afternoon, we'll have pretty good breezes. as we get into the nighttime hours, our temperatures will fall off. so game time tonight i think we'll be in the 50s but there will be a pretty good breeze out of the north and west, probably 15, 20 miles per hour. we'll see if that is a player in the game. the game time, no problem, we're in the expecting any rain showers. 64degrees our daytime high and breezy. a little warmer than yesterday. >> all right, cool. good time as we get ready to take this next game, right? >> can't wait. >> thank you very much. it is the talker throughout the region. jayson werth's walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth. worth's at bat was legendary.

turning to politics now and last night's debate between congressman paul ryan and vice president joe biden. it was heated at times. let's get more from sherry ly. >> reporter: this ones with a doozy. the vice president really clashed with his republican rival, paul ryan. the two candidates interrupted each other in a 90-minute debate that was as fiery and contentious every minute from start to finish. the vice president and the gop nominee presenting different viewpoints. >> can you cut tax rates by 20% and still preserve these important preferences for middle class taxpayers. >> not mathematically possible. >> it is. >> reporter: biden and ryan also challenging each other over foreign policy. >> the president of the united states has led with a steady hand and clear vision. governor romney, the opposite. the last thing we need now is

another war. >> what we he unraveling of the obama policy. >> reporter: the two sparring over the hot button issue of health care. >> obamacare takes $716 from medicine cage to spend on obamacare. >> what we did is we saved $716 billion and put it back, applied it to medicare. we cut the cost of made care. we stopped overpaying insurance companies and doctors and hospitals. >> the vice president trying to shift the momentum after mitt romney's strong showing at last week's debate. his 42-year-old rival keeps fighting back. >> i know you are under a lot of during rest to make up for lost ground but i think people will be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other. >> reporter: that is the way it went all night long. after last night's debate, the focus turns back to the two candidates at the top of the ticket. president obama and mitt romney

will have their second debate next tuesday. >> that next debate is next week at hofstra university in new york. the final match-up is set for the # 2nd florida. we will carry the next two debates live here on fox 5. -- the final match-up is set for the 22 in florida. theresa douglas drove her bus through the employee lounge last december. prosecutors say she had posted on facebook the night before that she was ready to go to jail. she faces up to 53 years behind bars when she is sentenced today. i 4-year-old boy is recovering after falling out of a ninth floor apartment window. audrey barnes has more. >> reporter: the screen on this ninth floor apartment window gave with a sending a 4-year- old boy tumbling some 90 feet to the ground.

instead of slamming into the industrial sized air conditioning units below, this tree broke his fall. aresa saw came by just as it happened. >> i saw the child lying right over there. >> reporter: was he cry something i don't yeah, he was crying. >> reporter: a neighbor called 911 and the boy was rushed to a tarek mehannaer center with serious injuries. police say he was conscious and talking and asked when he could go home. before that happens, investigators have some questions for his mother like was anyone watching him or was he home alone. >> two nights ago and she asked me would i watch the baby for her and she said she would get back with me on that. i never did see her. but when i came down today, this is what i seen, her baby on the ground. >> reporter: do you think he was left home alone?

>> i don't know. >> reporter: washington, who lived in the building 22 years, says this accident is a wake-up call. >> the kids are very inquisitive. they want to know what is this, what is that. you have to watch children. >> reporter: audrey barnes, fox 5 news. >> police in prince george's county are asking for your help in identifying this man who they say robbed two university of maryland students wednesday night and attempted to rob a third. all of the robberies occurred on baltimore avenue. the suspect robbed the first student at gunpoint. that student was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. the nationwide meningitis outbreak causing more worries this morning. that is coming up next as we check more headlines. plus, space shuttle endeavour on the move this morning headed to its final destination. we are cheing more headlines coming up next.

we are awaiting the announcement of this year's nobel peace prize winner. that is set to happen in about

20 minutes. this is no indication who the nobel committee has selected. the head of the committee has already said it was a unanimous and fairly easy decision. we'll bring you the information just as soon as we know all about t. today, a muslim civil liberties and advocacy group is expected to announce its advertising campaign. this is all in response to the anti-jihad ads that went up last week in metro stations. cair says their ads will go up in metro stations firing back at the controversial advertisements. last week, a judge ruled that metro had to alou the anti- jihad ads. some muslim americans see the ads as an attack on islam. the nationwide meningitis outbreak linked to tainted steroid shots is spreading. the number. cases has jumped to at least 170 from 137 just a day earlier

are open around the capital beltway. overnight construct has cheered traveling between nutley street and the capital beltway off of 66. no problems to report east or westbound. you will find on the beltway traveling between 95, 66 and continuing up towards the american legion bridge, overnight construction in the process of being cleared there as well. no trouble spots to report for those continuing north on i-95 out of newington. traffic volume rolling at speed continuing out towards the springfield interchange. traffic is running smoothly each way at the wilson bridge. lanes are open coming southbound along 270 leaving germantown headed out towards the lane divide. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. on-timetraffic. the board that oversees metro has released a report slamming a former board member and veteran d.c. council member jim graham for mixing city business with metro business. the 62-page report accused graham of trying to dissuade a

♪ the future of the university of the district of columbia was top priority yesterday afternoon as members of the university fought for a plan to get the school back on track financially. jobs and a campus location were just some of the issues at stake. fox 5's matt ackland sploins. >> reporter: a packed council chamber. sitting in the front, udc president alan sees toms. a councilmember listed off serious problems he sees at

udc. >> the university is currently in a financially untenable position. it is undercapitalized. >> the board of trustees has some. eed a number of ideas from job cuts to closing the udc community college campus on north capital, moving that campus to the main campus on connecticut avenue t could save more than $5 million a year. >> udc should be right size but the community college should be left alone. >> reporter: one of the first speakers focused his comments directly at the leader of the university, even speaking about issues fox 5 uncovered last year when it comes to expensive travel by dr. sessoms. >> dr. sessoms which was famous for taking overseas trips, being escort the around like he was the president of the united states, did not want anything to do with the community

college. >> reporter: michael brown compared udc to other universities. >> udc pays its faculty and staff substantially more than the salaries of its peer universities with overall average of 33% higher than the median range. >> reporter: those on staff begged the council for more support saying udc is moving in the right direction. >> we need your support, financial and otherwise, to be successful. thank you. >> reporter: that financial support that udc needs does not come cheap. the university is asking for $21 million to get the right sizing project started. $10million of that will be used in employee separation costs. with all the excitement over the washington nationals, let's in the forget about the redskins. another big game this weekend but the question is will robert griffin iii be ready? we'll get an update on his condition following last sunday's concussion. sports is coming up next. stay with us.
